Proud to Be a Cliché

At Crown Wealth Consultants, we spend our time looking after our client’s families by giving them expert financial advice, yet there is a sad irony that we do this from our hub in Hailsham, East Sussex, where 1 in 3 children live in poverty. 

It can be very cliche to say, ‘we wanted to give something back’, but it’s true. As a team we decided to look for a local cause where we could have an immediate and direct impact. That’s when we found Kids Count Project Hailsham. Mary Laxton, an absolute force of nature, set up the project over 5 years ago and this is how it works…. Mary gets a call from social services, key workers, schools, health visitors, midwives, community nursery nurses, or women’s refuge in East Sussex. They request an emergency bundle, over the 6,000 families helped, it includes; new baby items for a premature birth, school items for a teenager in with no school bag or shoes, birthday gifts for a child whose parents can only afford their food shop that week and clothes and books for a young child as their parent has had to flee domestic violence. Mary then puts an emergency shout out to her Facebook page for the items and people purchase or donate for the bundles. The service is run entirely by Mary from her home, where she has spare rooms dedicated to storing the emergency items. She is completely dependent on the generosity of her network of Facebook group followers and fundraising activities from people like the team at Crown Wealth Consultants. 

So, what skills do a group of people like us have that can be of use? We can reach out to our clients for support, we can provide sponsorship for fundraising events and we can organise a good knees up! And that’s exactly what we are doing. The value of a bundle is around £30, so we are launching a campaign with our clients to make a difference by ‘sponsoring a bundle’. We are also excited to provide sponsorship for the hotly anticipated return of a Hailsham Fun Run for all ages, abilities and disabilities in 2022, although some of us are more keen to marshall than run! We are also preparing for a night of fundraising in October with a quiz and curry event. We are hoping that having an ongoing relationship with Mary will mean that over time we can truly ‘give something back’ to our local community, and if that makes us a cliché, then we are proud to be one!
